Hung Gar Methods of Training

We use many methods of training in our school. However there are four main methods used.

  1. Empty Hand Forms —(Fighting imaginary opponents, no weapons) Training forms are used to teach correct body movement, philosophy of attack and defense, philosophy of Yin and Yang, coordination, agility, patients, power, proper breathing and chi flow.
  2. Two Man Fighting Forms -—Practicing a pre-arranged fighting set with a partner. Learning to move with correct timing of footwork using strikes, blocks and kicks against a partner to learn better fighting strategy.
  3. Weapons —Using traditional Chinese weapons (Swords, Spears, Staffs, etc) we learn to develop timing, coordination, speed, strength and stamina. Each weapon teaches something different. This training is a very important part of our traditional Gung Fu heritage. We practice solo forms and two man fighting forms with weapons. You will learn 16 different weapons in our school.
  4. Free Sparring —We practice many types of free sparring in the school. From a slow sparring to a full contact sparring with full protective gear. Sparring is the only way to learn how to use technique in a full contact situation yet in a controlled environment. It is very important to learn how to use what you have learned with punches, kicks and grabs that are real and not just drills. Don’t think you know how to use what you learn. KNOW THAT YOU CAN USE IT!!!
